The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan stated that he would personally inspect the various long-standing unresolved basic problems faced by the people of the Kallikkulam area in Vavuniya District and take steps to provide suitable solutions to them.

Following a request made by Hon. Member of Parliament for Vanni District M. Jegatheeswaran, Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan personally visited the Kallikkulam area today – on Tuesday 15 September 2026, to listen and inspect the problems faced by the people.

During this visit, the people brought to the Governor’s attention the 8 kilometre long Kallikkulam main road, which has not been renovated for approximately 40 years. The people stated that around 800 families use this road, which belongs to the Vavuniya South Tamil Pradeshiya Sabha, and that it is also an important transport route for students travelling to two schools.

The people pointed out that the long-standing lack of road repairs causes great difficulties for transportation and also creates obstacles in marketing their agricultural produce.

Having listened attentively to the people’s request, the Governor stated that steps would be taken to allocate the necessary funds to the Pradeshiya Sabha to renovate the Kallikkulam main road in two phases.

The people also stated that, due to the poor condition of the road, there is no proper bus service. In addition, the need to construct an elephant fence was also brought to the Governor’s attention.

Meanwhile, the people stated that the Department of Forest Conservation had encroached upon their paddy lands by planting boundary stones, and that interventions had recently taken place in lands they had been using for their livelihoods for a long period. They also brought to the Governor’s attention issues including the lack of proper land documents, the failure to provide lands to new families, and the need for housing schemes.

Furthermore, it was stated that although 18 persons with disabilities living in the village are planning to jointly start a self-employment initiative, there is currently no building facility for this purpose. The people requested that the currently damaged community centre building be renovated and provided for this purpose. The Governor stated that this request would be favourably considered and action would be taken.

In addition, the people pointed out that requests made to change the electricity connections to their houses have not yet been implemented.

Having listened to all the matters raised by the people, the Governor stated that each issue would be properly examined and appropriate action would be taken. He further stated that steps would be taken to bring all relevant officials personally to the Kallikkulam area, analyze the people’s problems on the ground and provide solutions.

During the Governor’s visit, Hon. Member of Parliament for Vanni District M. Jegatheeswaran and Hon. Pradeshiya Sabha Member Suthakar also joined him.
