Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan stated that the necessary measures to construct a permanent building for the Vavuniya Municipal Council would be considered favourably.
The third-quarter District Coordinating Committee meeting for the year 2026 of Vavuniya District was held today – on Friday evening, 04 September 2026, at the Vavuniya District Secretariat auditorium, under the joint chairmanship of Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan and Hon. Deputy Minister Upali Samarasinghe.
Following the welcome address by the District Secretary, the District Coordinating Committee Chairman, Hon. Deputy Minister Upali Samarasinghe, delivered the opening address. He stressed that development projects should be implemented by fully utilizing the funds allocated to Vavuniya District from various sources, ensuring that not even a single rupee of the allocated funds is returned unspent.
Subsequently, the progress of the measures taken by the relevant departments regarding the decisions reached after being considered at the previous District Coordinating Committee meeting was reviewed.
As the fact-finding inquiry committee appointed by the Governor of Northern Province regarding the improper encroachments on Vavuniya Tank had submitted its report, it was stated that, as a follow-up, a preliminary investigation committee had been appointed and was expected to complete the inquiry within two months.
The meeting also noted that the request to provide an ambulance to the Omanthai Hospital, made in view of the frequent road accidents occurring in the Omanthai area, had been fulfilled. At the same time, issues related to the Department of Forest Conservation were also discussed.
Attention was also paid to the measures being taken to mitigate the impacts that could be faced by Vavuniya District due to El Niño weather conditions. In particular, arrangements to ensure the supply of drinking water to the people during the forthcoming period were discussed.
This was followed by a briefing by the Deputy Inspector General of Police on the public security and social security situation in Vavuniya District. Information was also presented on the progress of drug control measures, including the seizure of deadly narcotics, as well as other security matters.
Various issues raised by the Hon. Members of Parliament were also examined and discussions were held with the relevant officials regarding matters requiring follow-up action. Furthermore, matters considered at the Divisional Coordinating Committee meetings and submitted to the District Coordinating Committee meeting were also reviewed.
Attention was also paid to the construction of a permanent building for the Vavuniya Municipal Council, and the Governor expressed a favourable position regarding taking the necessary measures to proceed with it.
Hon. Members of Parliament Selvam Adaikalanathan, Rishad Bathiudeen, Kader Masthan, M. Jagatheeswaran, S. Thilakanathan, T. Ravikaran and P. Sathiyalingam, the Hon. Mayor and Hon. Chairmen of the Pradeshiya Sabhas, Secretaries of Provincial Ministries, Deputy Chief Secretary – Planning, Heads of Provincial Departments, Executive Officers of the District Secretariat, District Officers of Line Ministries, members of the armed forces, police officers and representatives of public organizations, among many others, participated in the meeting.
