Commissioner of Local Government – Northern Province, Sampasivam Sutharshan, announced that an Integrated Waste Management Project will be implemented in Vavuniya District of the Northern Province with financial assistance from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea.
As part of this initiative, a team of experts from South Korea’s KEIL Engineering Company and KYAT Engineering Company, working under the sponsorship of KOICA, visited Vavuniya today – on Thursday, 9 July 2026, in connection with the project, which is to be established in the Pampaimadu area of Vavuniya.
During their visit, the delegation held detailed discussions with the Vice – Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya and the university’s specialists in environmental science and waste management.
In addition, an important meeting regarding the project was held today at the Office of the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government, Vavuniya District. The meeting was attended by the Provincial Secretary of the Northern Provincial Ministry of Local Government, the Northern Province Commissioner of Local Government, the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government for Vavuniya District, the Commissioner of the Vavuniya Municipal Council, Hon.Chairmen and secretaries of local authorities, as well as representatives of UNOPS, the project’s implementing agency in Sri Lanka.
The preliminary phase of the project has already commenced. The first stage, which includes data collection, preparation of the preliminary project design, and development of the implementation plan, is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. Thereafter, construction work and the installation of machinery will be expedited.
Through this project, it is expected that a long-term solution can be achieved for future waste management challenges in Vavuniya District. Furthermore, the Commissioner stated that the Integrated Waste Management Project in Vavuniya is expected to serve as a foundation for successfully implementing a coordinated and sustainable waste management system across the entire Northern Province in the future.
It is noteworthy that this project is being implemented in Badulla District of Uva Province and Vavuniya District of the Northern Province in Sri Lanka.
