The Chairman of the Northern Province Tourism Bureau, Dr. J. Vivekananthan, has urged local government authorities to conduct daily monitoring and ensure the proper maintenance of public sanitation facilities at major tourist destinations and in urban areas across the Northern Province.
In a media statement issued in this regard, he further stated:
“Tourists visiting the Northern Province, particularly the Jaffna District, have brought to our attention the shortcomings in the public sanitation facilities available in these areas.
Urgent efforts are currently underway to open the newly constructed modern public sanitation facility complex at the Jaffna Main Bus Stand for public use as soon as possible. The Northern Province Tourism Bureau is actively coordinating with the relevant authorities to ensure that this major public infrastructure, built with public money, is made accessible to the public without further delay.
The Pannai Amusement Park and Point Pedro are among the key attractions that contribute significantly to Jaffna’s tourism sector. Every evening, thousands of local residents and families visit the Pannai Amusement Park, while Point Pedro, the northern most point of Sri Lanka, attracts a large number of both domestic and international tourists.
Recognizing that clean and well-maintained public sanitation facilities are essential to enhancing the visitor experience and supporting sustainable tourism, the Northern Province Tourism Bureau has taken immediate steps to expedite the opening of the sanitation facilities at both locations for public use.
Local governments should ensure that the tourist destinations within their jurisdiction are kept clean. At the same time, the Northern Provincial Tourism Bureau is ready to provide its full support and financial assistance to further modernize and improve health infrastructure facilities where necessary.
In the future, he also requested that all parties work together to ensure that the basic needs of tourists and the public are met without any delay” he said in the statement.
