Northern Provincial Council

Permission granted to the Northern Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority’s flying squad inspectors to conduct inspections on buses authorized by the NTC

Engineer S. Vimaleswaran, Chairman of the Northern Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority, stated that if any shortcomings are found in luxury buses operating from the Northern Province to other provinces with route permits issued by the National Transport Commission (NTC), the public may lodge complaints with the Northern Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority.

He also noted that, based on an inspection conducted by the Authority, a bus operating under a permit issued by the National Transport Commission had been fined Rs. 20,000. Permission has now been granted to the Northern Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority’s flying squad inspectors to carry out inspections on buses authorized by the National Transport Commission as well.

Accordingly, the Authority’s flying squad inspectors carried out an inspection on a bus operating on the Mannar – Kalpitiya route. During the inspection, it was found that the bus did not possess a valid route permit and that passengers had not been issued tickets.

The Authority reported these violations in writing to the National Transport Commission. Following an investigation into the complaint, the National Transport Commission officially announced that the bus had been imposed an administrative fine of Rs. 20,000 for violating the relevant permit conditions.

Such inspection activities will be intensified throughout the Northern Province in the future.

Recently, the Authority has received numerous complaints from the public regarding the services provided by certain luxury buses. In particular, passengers have expressed dissatisfaction over issues such as seats that cannot be adjusted, incidents of bedbug bites from the seats, and air conditioning (A/C) not functioning properly.

Therefore, if passengers encounter such defects or irregularities while travelling on these luxury buses, they are requested to send their complaints without delay, along with appropriate evidence, to the WhatsApp number 071 9090900.
